UPS size limits

UPS enforces thresholds that affect what you pay and whether your package ships. The calculator above flags each one automatically.

  • Up to 130 inches: Standard rates.
  • 130 – 165 inches: Between 130 and 165 inches, the UPS Large Package Surcharge applies (~$170 for ground in 2026, subject to UPS rate updates).
  • Over 165 inches: Over 165 inches, UPS Ground will not accept the parcel — you need UPS Worldwide Express Freight or another carrier.

Maximum single side: 108 in. Maximum weight: 150 lb. Always verify against the current UPS rate guide before shipping high-value items.

How UPS measures girth

UPS uses the standard girth formula:

girth = 2 × (width + height)
length + girth = length + 2 × (width + height)

Worked example. A 50 × 20 × 20 inch box has girth (20 + 20) × 2 = 80 inches, and length + girth = 130 inches.

For cylindrical or irregular packages, UPS measures the longest length and the circumference at the widest point. For a tube, girth = π × diameter.

Frequently asked

What is the maximum girth allowed by UPS?

UPS allows up to 165 inches (419 cm) combined length plus girth. Between 130 and 165 inches, the UPS Large Package Surcharge applies (~$170 for ground in 2026, subject to UPS rate updates).

How is UPS girth calculated?

Girth equals 2 × (width + height), using the two smaller dimensions. Add the longest side for length + girth.

What happens if my package exceeds the limit?

Over 165 inches, UPS Ground will not accept the parcel — you need UPS Worldwide Express Freight or another carrier.

Does UPS measure tubes differently?

For cylindrical or irregular packages, UPS measures the longest length and the circumference at the widest point. For a tube, girth = π × diameter.
