Higher WHR is associated with abdominal fat distribution, which is more metabolically active and more strongly linked to cardiovascular disease than fat carried on hips and thighs.

Sources & standards
WHO's expert consultation defines increased health risk as a waist-to-hip ratio above 0.90 for men or above 0.85 for women, with risk rising further above 1.0 for either sex. This calculator reports your raw ratio only — it does not apply a risk category, since that judgment sits better with a clinician who has your full health context.
