How to measure waist circumference girth.

Waist circumference is one of the most widely used body measurements, both for fitness tracking and as a health indicator. The World Health Organization uses waist measurement in cardiovascular risk assessment.

Convert Waist measurement

Typical range: 75–95 cm for adult men, 65–85 cm for adult women (varies widely)

How to measure

Stand relaxed with feet shoulder-width apart. Locate the natural waist — the narrowest point of the torso, typically halfway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone (iliac crest). Wrap a flexible tape horizontally around this point, ensuring it sits flat and level. Measure at the end of a normal exhale without sucking in.

Tips for accuracy

  • Measure at the natural waist, not at the navel or where pants sit
  • Don't suck in; this defeats the purpose of the measurement
  • Measure at the end of a normal exhale
  • For health tracking, men's waist > 102 cm (40 in) and women's > 88 cm (35 in) indicate elevated cardiovascular risk

What it's used for

Body fat estimation (US Navy formula), waist-to-hip ratio, cardiovascular risk assessment, clothing sizing
